Your bank is closing its safe deposit boxes. Before you collect your papers, take a photo of each one.

Legacy Locker is an app for your phone and computer that keeps your family's important papers safe and in order. Take a photo of each paper, or send on the emails your bank or super fund sends you. It reads them, files them, and tells you what has run out or is missing. Then it builds the one list the bank and the lawyer will ask for.

What happens to papers from a safe deposit box?

Papers from a safe deposit box usually go into a drawer or a box at home, and get mixed in with everything else.

Wills, titles and share certificates sit beside old bills. Years later, nobody can find them, or nobody knows they were there.

A photo of each paper, taken before it goes in the drawer, keeps a copy safe and a note of where the original went.

Before you collect them, ask yourself

  • Could you put your hand on every paper today?
  • Is everything still current, or has something run out?
  • Could someone else find it all without you?
  • Could you give someone one list of everything you own?

What Legacy Locker does about it

  • You don't have to type anything.

Take a photo of a paper with your phone. If a statement or bill comes by email, send it on to your locker's own email address.

  • It gives your executor one list of everything you own.

Each line shows the paper it came from and where the original is kept. The list can be produced as at any date in the past.

  • It keeps an eye on your papers for you.

It reminds you when something is due or has run out, and sends you a short email each month about what needs a look.

What it found for the Whitfields

  • It worked out shares nobody had a paper for.

“Tasman Diversified Limited. Holding: 1,200 shares.”

Read from: Share holding statement, March 2018

Later in 2018, each Tasman Diversified share became one Larder Supermarkets share. The locker worked out that Margaret has 1,200 Larder Supermarkets shares, and shows how.

  • It answered from the policy booklet nobody reads.

“Flood. We cover loss or damage to your contents caused by flood, up to the amount shown on your schedule. We do not cover loss or damage caused by the sea, high tide or a storm surge.”

Read from: Brightwater Home Contents Product Disclosure Statement (PDS), page 34

Question: “Does the contents policy cover flood?” The locker shows the exact words from the policy booklet, with the page number. It does not say yes or no.

  • It asked the question nobody else could.

“We found AMP shares from 1998 but nothing since. Do you still have them?”

Read from: A question from the locker

Margaret's answer is kept in her own words, with the date: “Sold them when we bought the caravan. About 2004.” 14 August 2026.
