When Mum or Dad is unwell, someone has to find the papers. Make it easy for them.

Legacy Locker is an app for your phone and computer that keeps your family's important papers safe and in order. Take a photo of each paper, or send on the emails your bank or super fund sends you. It reads them, files them, and tells you what has run out or is missing. Then it builds the one list the bank and the lawyer will ask for.

At a kitchen table, an adult child and an older parent turn the pages of a folder of papers together, beside a cup of tea and reading glasses.

What papers do you need when a parent is unwell?

When a parent has a fall or becomes unwell, someone in the family usually has to find their bank, super and insurance papers.

Bills still need paying. The bank, the super fund and the insurer all ask for account numbers. The papers are often spread across drawers, folders and emails, and only Mum or Dad knows where.

Sitting down together now, with a phone, is much easier than searching later.

Questions to ask together

  • Could you put your hand on every paper today?
  • Do they show the account numbers someone else would need?
  • Does anything need doing?
  • Could someone else find it all without you?

How do I bring it up with Mum and Dad?

Make it about helping them, not taking over. Some ways to start:

  • “I've been sorting out my own papers, and I realised I wouldn't know where to find yours if I ever needed to. Could we go through them together one afternoon?”
  • “If you were in hospital for a few weeks, I'd want to keep the bills paid without bothering you. Can you show me where things are?”
  • “You don't have to show me everything. It stays your locker, and you choose what I can see.”

Then sit down together with a phone and start with one paper, such as a super statement.

What Legacy Locker does about it

  • You don't have to type anything.

Take a photo of a paper with your phone. If a statement or bill comes by email, send it on to your locker's own email address.

  • It keeps an eye on your papers for you.

It reminds you when something is due or has run out, and sends you a short email each month about what needs a look.

  • It asks you the questions your family can't ask later,

and keeps your answers, with the date.

What it found for the Whitfields

  • It worked out shares nobody had a paper for.

“Tasman Diversified Limited. Holding: 1,200 shares.”

Read from: Share holding statement, March 2018

Later in 2018, each Tasman Diversified share became one Larder Supermarkets share. The locker worked out that Margaret has 1,200 Larder Supermarkets shares, and shows how.

  • It answered from the policy booklet nobody reads.

“Flood. We cover loss or damage to your contents caused by flood, up to the amount shown on your schedule. We do not cover loss or damage caused by the sea, high tide or a storm surge.”

Read from: Brightwater Home Contents Product Disclosure Statement (PDS), page 34

Question: “Does the contents policy cover flood?” The locker shows the exact words from the policy booklet, with the page number. It does not say yes or no.

  • It asked the question nobody else could.

“We found AMP shares from 1998 but nothing since. Do you still have them?”

Read from: A question from the locker

Margaret's answer is kept in her own words, with the date: “Sold them when we bought the caravan. About 2004.” 14 August 2026.
